Why Are Root Canals Needed?
Root canal treatment is performed on teeth with infected tissues or damaged pulp to relieve pain and prevent the need for extraction. This procedure also helps preserve the natural tooth and can reduce the likelihood of more extensive dental work in the future.
By removing the decay and bacteria from the interior of the tooth, the dentist can help prevent the spread of infection and restore the tooth.
Patients who undergo root canal treatment typically experience little pain or discomfort, and the result is a healthy, restored tooth. With proper care, the majority of root canal-treated teeth can last a lifetime.
If Dr. Ma determines that you are in need of a root canal, he will refer you to his other location, Accent Dental, to complete the procedure.
The Root Canal Procedure
A root canal is a procedure in which your dentist removes diseased blood vessels, nerves, and other tissues from the interior of a tooth. Without a root canal, damaged teeth eventually die and must be extracted.
Your dentist will begin by removing the diseased tissue from the tooth. Next, they will disinfect the inner chamber and fill it with medicated material to prevent recurrence of the infection. To finish the procedure, the tooth is generally capped with a dental restoration, such as a crown.
